Speaking is an important part of learning a language — and in JOYup, children begin practising it from the very first lessons.
In JOYup How-To #3, we show you how a Speaking activity works from start to finish.
Each Speaking activity begins with a simple question connected to a picture.
Children can listen to the question and use the illustration to understand the context before answering.
If they want a closer look, they can double-tap the picture to enlarge it.
Children do not have to guess if they are unsure what to say.
By pressing and holding the picture, they can hear a sample answer.
This gives them another opportunity to listen to the language before trying it themselves.
When the child is ready, they tap the microphone and record their own response.
The goal is to encourage children to actively use the English they have already met in stories and other activities.
After the answer is recorded, JOYup provides feedback in four areas:
Content – does the answer communicate the right information?
Grammar + vocabulary – how well does the child use the language needed for the task?
Fluency – how smoothly is the answer spoken?
Pronunciation – how clearly are the words pronounced?
Children can also listen to their own recording.
If they want to improve their answer, they can record another one and check the new result.
This is an important part of the process: the first answer does not have to be perfect.
Children can:
listen → speak → check → listen to themselves → try again
When the child is happy with the result, they can select Complete & Collect.
The activity is completed and the child receives a reward that contributes to their progress in JOYup. ⭐

Regular, short opportunities to speak can help children become more comfortable using English aloud and gradually build confidence.
